Earthing and bonding terminology for UK projects
UK specifications normally distinguish earthing from protective bonding. Exothermic welding may be considered for permanent connections within designed earthing, lightning-protection, rail, renewable-energy or industrial grounding systems, subject to the project requirements.
Copper tape dimensions, stranded conductor cross-sections and electrode diameters should be stated in millimetres. For outdoor projects, storage and mould preparation must account for rain, condensation and damp working conditions because moisture can affect the process.

Confirm the current local and project requirements
The IET publishes BS 7671 requirements for electrical installations and Guidance Note 8 for earthing and bonding, including information from BS 7430. The current project specification and responsible designer determine which standards, materials and verification requirements apply.

A UK enquiry should state cable cross-section, tape width and thickness, earth-electrode diameter, joint orientation, quantity, delivery postcode and required technical submittals. If a tender uses a connection code from another system, include a drawing so the geometry can be checked.

Why must the graphite mould be dry?
Graphite can retain moisture. The mould must be inspected and prepared according to the supplied instructions before use.
Does an exothermic weld automatically satisfy BS 7671?
No. The complete installation must be designed, selected, erected and verified against the applicable requirements by competent parties.
