How Does Exothermic Welding Work?
Exothermic welding forms a permanent molecular bond between conductors. Unlike a connection held together by clamping pressure, the weld does not rely on bolts or other mechanical fasteners to maintain contact.
The conductors are positioned in the matching graphite mould. The specified disc, weld material and starting material are then placed according to the product instructions before ignition. This is a process overview, not a substitute for the installation and safety instructions supplied with the product.
Exothermic Welding Process -
Ignition starts a high-temperature reaction that produces molten weld metal. The metal flows into the weld cavity, bonds the conductors and solidifies as it cools. Follow the specified cooling time before opening the mould. The mould can then be cleaned and inspected before reuse.
Simple Process of Exothermic Weld -
Exothermic welding is a controlled process that should be carried out by trained personnel using the specified mould, weld material and protective equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, including preparation, moisture precautions, ignition and cooling requirements.
